Death In The Afternoon

$1,850.00

Taking its cue from Hemingway's book of the same name, this 3-dimensional wall sculpture depicts an abstract bull in the throes of a bullfight. A controversial tradition yet steeped in culture, bullfighting is still going on today. I attended one myself in Madrid and was transfixed. To be a matador takes serious guts. The bulls intimidated me, and I was the one sitting in the stands...imagine being up front and personal with (an angry) one. The event held six bullfights. It's not a given that the matador will win, so if the crowd decides the fight is at a standstill, the bull returns home. On that day, three bulls were killed and three survived. The dispatched bulls were immediately slaughtered on the premises in an adjacent open-air space, where every part of the animal was used. An unforgettable experience.

Wood
