Wooden foundry patterns offer interesting glimpses into the skill it takes to model them out of wood first before being used in the casting process. Engine parts are no different. Take this LARGE 2-cylinder crankshaft, for instance. I don't know what kind of motor it was designed for, but a big boat or steam engine comes to mind. Part of what makes crankshafts so interesting is their symmetry and balance - traits obviously required for such a part.
